Which over the course of 4 days will take you on an adventure through snow-covered mountains (reaching a high point in the puna of 4800 meters above sea level) as well as semi-tropical and tropical rainforests on your way to Machu Picchu, the wonder of the modern world?
This trek does require moderate to strong physical effort, so we recommend you prepare physically and arrive to Cusco at least 2 days before the trek in order to acclimatize.
Itinerary of Our Tour to Salkantay- Machu Picchu:
DAY 1: CUSCO – SORAYPAMPA: approx. 15 km
We leave Cusco at 4:30 am (we’ll pick you up at your hotel between 4:00 and 4:25), passing through the towns of Limatambo and Izcuchaca before arriving to Mollepata (2900 meters above sea level) at approximately 7:30 am. Here you have a chance to eat breakfast, at your own cost. Next, the group will continue the excursion by truck, which in about 50 minutes will take you to the starting point of the trail at Markokasa (3380 meters above sea level). From Markokasa, you’ll hike about 5 hours through the villages of Markokasa and alongside an Incan canal, until arriving at Soraypampa at 1:30pm, 3900 meters above sea level. Here we will enjoy our first lunch and camp for the evening. After lunch, you’ll have some free time to rest and visit the beautiful Huamantay Lake, located 4200 meters above sea level, where you’ll find incredible views of the mountain and surrounding area. In the evening we’ll have dinner and rest.
DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA – CHAULLAY: aprox. 21km
At 7:00 am, the group will begin the day with a nutritious breakfast to then continue on the trek. On this day, you’ll ascend from Soraypampa to the highest point on the trail, “Salkantay Pass” (4650 meters above sea level) (about a 5-6 hour hike). You’ll pass through Salkantaypampa and Soyrocoha, where you’ll see a lovely small lake. The descent will take you about 4 hours in arrive in Huayracmachay, at 3800 meters above sea level. Here you’ll have lunch, before continuing the descent 3 more hours to Chaullay, where we’ll set up camp for the second night at 2900 meters above sea level.
DAY 3: CHAULLAY – SAHUAYACO BEACH – SANTA TERESA: approx. 11km
We’ll begin the day with a restorative breakfast, and begin the trail. On this day we’ll be able to observe several coca crops, which is considered the sacred leaf of the ancestors and is still cultivated in the tropical areas of Peru. The last leg of the hike will be a 5-hour descent to the village of La Playa, at 1900 meters above sea level. Here we’ll have lunch before continuing on by bus to Santa Teresa, where we’ll spend the night. While here, we recommend you take the option to visit the Cocalmayo hot springs, which are wonderful!
DAY 4: SANTA TERESA – AGUAS CALIENTES: approx. 17 km
You’ll awake this morning in a tropical paradise full of nature and history, with your breakfast ready for you. It will take about 6 hours hiking to arrive to the town of Aguas Calientes, at the base of Machu Picchu. You’ll pass through the well-known resting point of Hydroelectric, where you’ll be served a box lunch. If you would like to take the train from Hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes, you can do so in order to arrive earlier and better-rested.
The hike stops in various places where you’ll be able to see impressive waterfalls that originate in nearby glaciers and beautiful landscapes. In the afternoon you’ll arrive to the town of Aguas Calientes, at 2000 meters above sea level, where you’ll spend the night in a hostel. The last dinner of the journey is included in a restaurant, where your guide will coordinate with the group for the following day’s visit to Machu Picchu.
DAY 5: MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO:
According to what the group agreed upon with the guide, you’ll begin the visit to Machu Picchu early the following morning.
If you’d like to climb up to the archeological site on foot, you should begin at 4:00, and if you’d like to go by bus you’ll leave at 5:00am.
The ascent to Machu Picchu on foot takes about an hour and 20 minutes.
If you prefer, you can take the bus up the mountain in order to feel well-rested and arrive with energy to enjoy your visit to Machu Picchu.
Once you have arrived to Machu Picchu, you’ll enter presenting your passport and entrance ticket. The tour with the guide will last about 2 horas, and afterwards you’ll have free time to explore and walk around Machu Picchu. You can climb Huayna Picchu if you would like, walk to the Sun Gate or the Inca Bridge, or simply take your time to enjoy the peace and tranquility of Machu Picchu!
In the afternoon you’ll return to Cusco.
