Inty Raymi Cusco
In this short trip we can enjoy the marvelous spectacles that can been seen during a visit to Cusco in these dates. The rains have almost gone; the fields are green and the festivals start, showing the colours and the traditions that most impress the traveller looking to connect with local people. We begin our explorations in the World Heritage centre of Cusco, known as the “belly button of the world” and we visit in the following five days all of the Inca splendors and the very special festival of Inti Raymi.
22nd June – City tour
After your arrival, reception and transfer to the Hotel, we recommend that you take a brief rest in order to acclimatize. For the afternoon we will have a guided tour around the city of Cusco, visiting the Main Plaza (the Plaza de Armas), the Cathedral and the Temple of the Sun (the Koricancha). The tour continues outside the city where we will visit other Inca sites like Kenko, Tambo Machay, Puca Pucara and the impressive Sacsayhuaman. This fortress like structure was built strategically on a hill that dominates the Cusco skyline and is famous for its enormous carved rocks, assembled with an amazing precision, that make up the external walls of the complex. Some of these stones are larger than 9 metres in height and weigh more than 350 tonnes!
23 of June – The Sacred Valley of the Incas – Cusco
Guided tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, following the sacred river of the Incas to visit the archaeological complexes of Pisac, and an Indian market, afterwards we will visit Ollantaytambo, a charming traditional village. On our return, we will enter a typical and picturesque town of Chincheros, where we can find the remains of the royal estate of the Inca Tupac Yupanqi. We will admire the well preserved Inca Wall in the main plaza and we will visit the beautiful colonial church with interesting frescos in its portico constructed on the foundations of an Inca building. During our return to the city of Cusco, we will enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and peaks that make our trip an unforgettable experience. Transfer to the hotel
24th June – Inti Raymi – Cusco
Breakfast, after which we are transferred to around the Koricancha for the festival that accompanies the procession of the Inca (Emperor) and the Nusta (Virgin) in a royal procession and the nobles. We will watch the rituals with the coca leaf between the mayor and the Inca, and will then be transferred up to the site of Sacsayhuaman where the festival continues with the ceremony of the “chicha”. (Chicha is a maize beverage).
There is also a ceremony to ignite the sacred fire, a sacrifice of a llama (ritualized) the rite of Sankhu (maize bread) and final message of the Inca and then a presentation of sets of dancer of all the different groups of the Inca Empire. Box lunch.
25 June – Machu Picchu – Cusco
After breakfast we will be transferred to the train station, from where we will then travel to the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu. Arriving at the station in the village of Aguas Calientes, we will take a bus that will take us up a zig zagging road (approx. 30 mins) towards the incredible Machu Picchu. The excursion includes a guided tour of the City, visiting the Main Plaza, the round Tower, the sacred Intihuatana, the royal rooms, the Temple of the Three Windows and the Cemeteries. After the guided tour you will have free time to explore this wonder of the world.
In the afternoon, we will return to Cusco by train, and will them be transferred to our hotel
26th June Cusco – Lima
